HELPING HOMELESS PEOPLE

The Salvation Army is the largest provider of social services to homeless people in the UK. Click here to find out more. Here in Preston we are unable to offer any housing or accommodation but offer support and advice as we are able.

Every Friday between 12 noon and 1.30pm we provide a free meal and drop in for anyone in need.

We work in partnership with Big Issue in the North in managing their team of vendors in Preston and the surrounding Area. Our depot is open  on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays  between 10am and 12.30pm. Vendors come in to purchase magazines at £1 which they can then sell at £2  We will enrol new sellers who provide some evidence of being homeless and are willing to agree to follow our code of conduct (on Mondays and Wednesdays only).

We also respond as we are able to help people who are roofless or destitute. We can offer showers and  laundry facilities by arrangement. We are usually able to provide a change of clothing through our charity shop, and subject to availability, bedding for people who are forced into sleeping rough.

Food Parcels are only available on referral from a recognised agency such as Social Services or a supported housing project, and we usually only have a very limited selection of canned foods available. For details of our referral procedures and guidelines please download the pdf document Guidelines for Referrals for Assistance by clicking here

We are active members of the Preston Homelessness Forum and have been working with them to develop a website information resource for  homeless people and the agencies that serve them.  On this website CLICK HERE you can find up to date information about all services for homeless people in Preston, and can download information leaflets to give to homeless people, and for those who want to help the homeless.

A recent research report The Seeds of Exclusion, the fourth in a series of reports published by The Salvation Army, identifies how patterns of early-life experience contain the seeds of later problems, and how The Salvation Army and others might tackle them. Click here to find out more
